Penguin is back! This beautiful seaside town is alive with vibrancy, colour and pride.
The Penguin Foreshore group initially inspired the community to focus on their greatest asset, the Penguin foreshore. Their vision for what this wonderful area could become, received a major boost in 2018 when Central Coast Council and the community decided to tackle a '7 Day Makeover' of Penguin. The '7 Day Makeover' is a concept formed and honed over many years by a company called Creative Communities. The '7 Day Makeover' approach avoids traditional methods of reinvigorating town centres and brings the community infrom the very beginning of the idea until the final moment of down tools. It’s like a reality TV makeover except that it’s real! Community volunteers of all ages and backgrounds came together to beautify and revitalise the town. Over 7 big busy days, wine barrel planters were filled with flowers, bollards sculpted and painted to create the Penguin Adventure trail, new foreshore decks were built, seats upgraded or replaced and rubbish bins painted with unique designs.
Not content to rest on their laurels, the Penguin volunteers have become an incorporated group and are excitedly developing bold and colourful ideas for the future. Meanwhile the Coastal Pathway Coalition is now fully funded and commencement of a shared path between Wynyard and Devonport will begin in 2020.History has not been forgotten either with an upgrade and renewed appreciation of the heritage value of the Penguin General Cemetery .
