The winner of the Keep Australia Beautiful Tasmanian Clean Beaches Award 2019 is the Great Eastern Clean Up.
When the Glamorgan Spring Bay Council Natural Resources Management Committee decided to tackle the issue of marine debris on the Tasmanian east coast, they had no idea that so many people would join in and that so much rubbish would be collected. 200 volunteers cleaned 38 sites and removed a staggering 90 cubic metres of litter from the coastal environment.
The litter was then sorted and recyclables were processed and data collected to help build a picture of what the litter consisted of and where it came from. The overall objective is to find ways to stop more of the litter at source.
The clean ups success owed much to the strength of the partnerships between Glamorgan Spring Bay Council. Parks & Wildlife Services and other government agencies, local business and community.
